The Edgworth Childrens Home and Orphange (N.C.H.O)
This was beginning of one of the most successful charity organizations founded by The Revd. Thomas Bowman Stephenson; a Methodist minister.
The Edgworth Home became the first National Childrens Home on the moorland site above the picturesque village of Edgworth Nr Bolton in Lancashire.
In July 2002 Crowthorn Special Needs Residential School (formally known as Edgworth Home) closed it's doors after 130 years of caring for children.
Many of the home children began new lives abroad during the emigration Schemes from 1873-1934.
A Children's Home was set up in Hamilton Ontario Canada from 1873-1934
During my 18 years of working at
Crowthorn School. I became fascinated by the Edgworth Home's Great History and
have written a book "Edgworth to Crowthorn"-
The story of
a children's home - Published
May 2005. The book charts the history of
the Edgworth Home and includes many moving recollections from the ex boy's and girls.

Over the years I have had the great pleasure of meeting many of the ex boy's and girls who return for an annual Reunion in May each year.
The Reunions still take place today even though the the school is closed and the buildings are now sold, such is the strength of feeling for their "Home"
The Annual Edgworth Reunion is held on the first bank holiday Monday in May.
